Ionization of Rydberg Atoms by a Stark Kick

چکیده
We provide a rigorous lower bound for the ionization probability of a Rydberg atom under the perturbation by a time-dependent electric eld in the form of an ultrashort pulse idealized as a Dirac-function. This estimate is of the form 1 ? O(F ?4 0) for large values of the electric eld F 0. For the hydrogen atom we also prove the scaling behavior F 0 n ?1 , predicted recently by Reinhold et al. Phys. Rev. for the electric eld required to ionize a given percentage of states with principal quantum number n.

Ionization of oriented elliptic Rydberg states by half-cycle pulses
Recently sources of subpicosecond, unipolar ‘‘halfcycle’’ electromagnetic field pulses have been developed and employed to study the ionization of Rydberg atoms. These half-cycle pulses ~HCP! were used first to study the ionization of Rydberg atoms with well-defined angular momentum quantum numbers @1#. More recently HCP have been used also to study the ionization of extreme parabolic states or...
متن کاملMagnetic trapping of strongly-magnetized Rydberg atoms
Effective magnetic moments of drift Rydberg atoms in strong magnetic fields are obtained for different energy and angular-momentum states. Classical two-body trajectory calculations and quantummechanical one-body calculations are employed. For heavy atoms such as rubidium, the trapping dynamics can largely be explained by the net magnetic moment due to the cyclotron and the magnetron motion of ...
متن کاملRydberg atom spectroscopy enabled by blackbody radiation ionization
We have excited helium atoms from their metastable 2 3S state to Rydberg states in the range 13 < n < 50 in a two-step process via the 3 3P state using light at λ = 389 nm and 785–815 nm. Atoms in a thermal beam (100 K) cross partially overlapping laser beams of the appropriate frequencies in the counterintuitive order to exploit the high efficiency of stimulated rapid adiabatic passage. The in...
متن کاملEffects of imperfect unipolarity on the ionization of Rydberg atoms by subpicosecond half-cycle pulses.
In recent experiments [1,2], Rydberg atoms have been exposed to ultrashort, electric-field pulses. The electric field in these pulses is nearly unipolar, and has a temporal shape which resembles one-half of a cycle of THz-band radiation [3]. In the experiments [1,2], the 0.5-psec dura tion of these "half-cycle pulses" (HCPs), 1"HCP' is shorter than or comparable to the classical Kepler period ...
متن کاملDisplacing Rydberg electrons: the mono-cycle nature of half-cycle pulses.
A THz "half-cycle" pulse is a fast ( <1 ps) unipolar pulse, followed by a slow unipolar pulse of opposite polarity. We found that the interaction of such THz pulses with very high Rydberg states results in a displacement of the electron within the atom, while the ionization is strongly suppressed. In classical terms: the first fast unipolar feature corresponds to a start kick of the Rydberg ele...
